(writing notes) Howie described a series of events in which Nathan turned the Republican approach to illegal immigration into a huge embarrassment.
Howie
In response to a summons from the top, there's a sense that the Republicans will benefit if nativist sentiment, specifically as regards those seeking to cross the border from Mexico into this country - if those efforts to close that border are seen as important for the integrity of our country. Those sentiments that are associated with a concern for the integrity of our country and particularly its economic well-being in the face of impoverished immigrants - that sentiment is a good sentiment.
It works to the advantage of our party. So it's been my job to kind of talk it up. And particularly in that part of the country that is alive to the issue - I mean the southwest. So as part of my efforts to keep this issue alive and in the minds of the public I developed a campaign of bumper stickers and buttons and tee-shirts. Some of them more clever than others, all of them kind of nice. They've been out there and they've been effective. But this time Nathan pulled one that just - I'm shaken. He created a tee-shirt.
This shirt that Nathan scribed reads, 'My friend crossed the Rio Grande and all I got is this lousy death notice.'
Well, horrible in its own right, Doctor. But what I discovered is it is the fastest-selling tee-shirt worn by Minutemen and children and elders, women, boys, girls all over the southwest. That's what I stirred up with Nathan's help. I'm horrified, Doctor. I'm horrified.
